Gabrielle Thornton

I made a mistake.
I allowed myself to be born. I allowed myself access into a life that wasn’t mine, and for that, I had willingly submitted my body and soul to a man whose sadistic pleasures knew no bound, a man who relished in my pain as much as he craved my flesh.

A monster I would do anything to escape.

But what if I could make it stop? What if the cost of freedom was a single night in a stranger’s arms? What if one final sin was all I needed to commit to find peace?

Kieran Kincaid

I had always known of the sickness that lived inside my father, the demons who controlled the man. His death was a blessing to every innocent he’d destroyed with his dark hunger.

Yet, despite his demise becoming my curse, a shackle trapping me in his twisted secrets, it lured me to it, too. It promised me the thing I coveted above all else. It seduced me deeper into the world I wish I knew nothing of, but there was no turning back, not even if by accepting, by taking what didn’t belong to me made me a monster like him.

Gabby would finally be mine.

It was a pleasure to read Protector’s Claim by Airicka Phoenix and to offer my review! A dark romance with a super-alpha male and a strong woman is a wonderful way to spend a day!

Airicka Phoenix writes the most complex story lines in her books. This is no exception! The story moves quickly and from twist to turn, and she kept the suspense building until the very end!

Airicka writes characters that are so perfectly flawed and written in an absolutely brilliant manner! Poor Gabrielle, there is so much more to her than the outcast! Kiernan is so much more than a rich, pretty face! The heat between them will scorch your brain cells, I’m here to tell you!

It’s always difficult to write a review for a book like Protector’s Claim without giving it all away! I can’t wait to hear what you have to say about it!

I give PROTECTOR’S CLAIM by Airicka Phoenix five cups of steaming hot Room With Books coffee! I most definitely recommend you get your copy so you can join in the chatter! This book is bound to be a best-seller and the talk of the town for quite some time!

“You live here alone?” I asked as he left me at the wide, U-shaped island dominating the majority of the main area to wander over to the fridge.

He nodded. “For the last three years.”

“Where’s your mom?”

He yanked the doors open, releasing a puddle of yellow light across the floor. “She has her own flat downtown. Likes it better there. Closer to the shops.”

It seemed like such a waste, all that space. I couldn’t picture me there at all with all those looming, empty rooms and winding corridors. I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. My apartment wasn’t much to brag about. Even with its smallness, I still felt the pang of loneliness. I couldn’t imagine being here in the cold and dust, surrounded by things that would offer no comfort.

“You don’t like it.”

He was watching me when I blinked out of my reverie.

“It’s not that I don’t like it,” I clarified carefully. “It’s just so…”

“Ostentatious?” He brought out a platter of fruit and placed it on the wraparound counter. “Overdone? An eyesore?”

“Lonely,” I whispered. “I don’t know how I feel about you being here by yourself all the time. I’d lose my mind.”

“That’s the thing, love.” He rounded to my side. “I’ve been alone my entire life. You get used to it.”

“I still don’t like it.”

His hands found my waist and I was pulled to him. Warm palms glided up to my shoulder blades. The heat of them radiated through the thin fabric of my top.

“Then don’t leave me here alone.”

My breath caught. My heart tripped in my chest. It quickened with the light bump of his nose against mine.

“You don’t make sense,” I murmured, fingers lifting to curl around his bare shoulders. “Everything you keep talking about, marriage and moving in together after only one night … men usually avoid those things, don’t they?”

His nose, his lips grazed mine with every slow rock of his head. “I don’t know about other men, but I’ve been waiting three years for you, Gabby. I’ve done my time. I’ve accepted that there’s no winning whatever pull you have on me. The want I had for you in the beginning is now a need I won’t deny myself. I need you. If not here, then I’ll find us a new place, anywhere you want. Whatever you want, it’s yours, just … let me keep you.”

I kissed him.

F*ck common sense.

Making Peace With Suicide

Insightful, compelling, and compassionate, Making Peace with Suicide: A Book of Hope, Understanding, and Comfort takes a good hard look at the world-wide phenomena of suicide. This book is designed for anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide and felt that sucker punch of grief; for anyone who is in pain, walking unsteadily, and considering suicide as an option; and for anyone who works with, guides, or counsels those feeling suicidal and/or suffering the profound grief from a suicidal loss.

Making Peace with Suicide includes stories of courage, vulnerability, and steadfastness from both the survivors of suicidal loss as well as the unique perspective of the formerly suicidal. It offers shared wisdom and coping strategies from those who have walked before you. It explores the factors leading to suicide and the reasons why some do and some don’t leave suicide notes.

Making Peace with Suicide sheds light on the phenomena of suicide vis-à-vis our teens, the military, new mothers, as an end-of-life choice, and asks if addiction is a form of slow suicide. It provides a seven-step healing process and opens the door to consider suicide and the soul, the heart lesson of suicide, and the energies of suicide.

If suicidality has impacted your life, Making Peace with Suicide is a must-read. You will be guided through the unknown territory, given insights to allow understanding, stories to help you heal, and ways to make peace with a heart wide-open. Making Peace with Suicide is good medicine for the body, mind, and soul.

BOOK REVIEW

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of “MAKING PEACE WITH SUICIDE” by Adele Ryan McDowell, Ph.D.  for the purpose of an honest review.

Suicide and books about suicide are anything but pleasurable topics for me. I have been on both sides of this issue for the past 30+ years. My first experience with suicide was in high school when a boy I knew was threatening to kill himself and the crisis line called because he said he would talk to me. I didn’t know what to say to him! I worked a hotline when I was going through college, majoring in Social Work, in the 80s. I wasn’t any better equipped to take those calls either!

I have seen first-hand the destruction that suicide leaves in it’s wake as I watched my own family try to deal with my near successful suicide attempt. I grieved when my husband tried to take his own life as he laid in the ICU and I didn’t know if he would survive. I held my five-year-old grandchild as she sobbed uncontrollably for the father that was suddenly gone because he wasn’t feeling right in his head. We couldn’t explain it to her then, and I hope, after reading “MAKING PEACE WITH SUICIDE” by Adele Ryan McDowell, Ph.D that I might be better equipped when she is old enough to start asking the questions I know will be coming!

“MAKING PEACE WITH SUICIDE” by Adele Ryan McDowell, Ph.D is very readable. From the very beginning, Dr. McDowell makes certain that the book would connect to every person who might pick it up. The language is intended for the layman and the professional alike! She offers insights into some wonderful healing methods for those that have been left in trauma and pain!

I do take exception to the talk of reincarnation as it comes up in the latter part of the book. This is a personal belief for each person and is something that each reader must take in along with that belief system about death and the afterlife.

I give “MAKING PEACE WITH SUICIDE” by Adele Ryan McDowell, Ph.D four cups of steaming hot Room With Books coffee and I get a copy for yourself!

Praise for Making Peace with Suicide

“As a minister/therapist for more than thirty years as well as a wife who lost her military husband to suicide, I have never found a more compassionate, effective book on suicide and its aftermath. This book serves many needs and highlights the myriad ways in which suicide changes one’s life direction. I cannot say strongly enough how powerful and helpful this book is.”–Rev. Colleen E. Brown, Unity minister

“The loss of a loved one by any means is traumatic. When the loss is by suicide, in addition to the grief of the loss itself, survivors are often left riddled with guilt, anger, shame, and endless questioning, by both themselves and by others. In Making Peace with Suicide, Dr. McDowell gently and brilliantly weaves vital suicide survivor education with comforting and inspirational thoughts and quotes, all designed to direct the reader on a path of healing, resolution and peace.  A must-read for anyone who has been touched by the tragedy of suicide and left to answer the question, ‘Why?’ ”—Carole Brody Fleet, award-winning and bestselling author of Widows Wear Stilettos…; Happily Even After…; and When Bad Things Happen to Good Women…

“Finally. A book that explains—in the simplest of terms, in a non-sensational, non-academic manner—the phenomenal, worldwide epidemic we call suicide. If you read one book on mental illness and how it affects our world, READ THIS ONE!”–Ginny Sparrow, Editor, American Association of Suicidology

“No topic could be more timely than suicide. This remarkable book addresses people who have contemplated ending their lives as well as those who have to deal with the aftermath of those who succeeded. But it will also be invaluable to mental health workers and military chaplains, especially those who deal with young people who have been bullied and veterans with PTSD. For such a complex topic, Dr. McDowell’s writing style is reader-friendly and the stories she presents may well evoke tears. Her wise recommendations include teaching self-mastery techniques to help people cope with the stress of a success-oriented society. I have read many books on this sensitive topic, but none with the breadth and scope of Making Peace with Suicide.”–Stanley Krippner, PhD; Co-author, Personal Mythology: The Psychology of Your Evolving Self and Haunted by Combat: Understanding PTSD in War Veterans

GUEST POST

How do we help a loved one who has lost someone to suicide?

 by Adele Ryan McDowell, Ph.D.

Suicide is often a sudden, unexpected death. It leaves loved ones reeling with shock, confusion, heartbreak, anger and whole panoply of emotions.

When word gets out about a death by suicide, there is a ripple effect. The loss moves out in ever-widening circles and whoever hears or knows anyone impacted by the loss wants to do something. Bake lasagna, make the calls, organize logistics, walk the dog, help with the service, be a shoulder, lend an ear. They want to feed you, nourish you and hold you. They want to help you stay afloat when you are drowning in heartbreak. They feel your loss, and your loss becomes their loss.

Loss is primal; we all feel it. And this is especially true when we hear of a suicide, and especially, the suicide of a young person with their unfurled life before them.

It is hard to see our loved ones doubled over in grief and pain. We want to do something – anything — to help ease their misery.

What can we do when someone we care about loses a loved to suicide?

  1. Stand there.

I know that might sound funny, but what I mean is that you stay grounded, are present and don’t head for the hills. You do not shy away or avoid the reality before you. It is the truth that is in the middle of the room. You bring your fully present, open-hearted self into the room. Presence – and that includes acceptance, non-judgment and compassion — are the greatest of gifts.

  1. Expect the unexpected.

Death can bring out the best and the worst in people. Death by suicide can become a trip-wire for some. Their unconscious, what-were-you-thinking criticism, inappropriateness and nervous chatter can surface and stun a room for all the wrong reasons. Try not to react and let it go.

Conversely, death can imbue a person with a sensitivity, gentleness and strength that soothes the soul. These people bring a loving, other-focused attendance that knits together the emotional safety nets for the bereaved.

Further, every one expresses their grief in their own unique way — whatever their style, be it get-up-and-go or shut-the-door-on-the-world. Grief is an idiosyncratic, winding road of a process. There is no calendar. There is no right or wrong. It takes as long as it takes as each person ploughs through their own murky waters to find sturdier footing.

  1. Speak from the heart.

Suicide is not an easy conversation. People get tongue-tied. They don’t know what to say or they’re afraid of saying the wrong thing.

Please withhold the shoulda/coulda/woulda’s and any form of judgment or criticism. Avoid peppering the bereaved with questions asking for all the suicide details.

Listen. Be kind. Offer specific help.

More than likely the bereaved is overwhelmed and exhausted. Go gently. Don’t take anything personally. Simply be there and speak from your heart. You do not need perfect words. You only need to share from your heart. Who knows, you may cry together, hold hands, sit in silence or giggle momentarily at something absurd.

Going forward, please note that many survivors of suicide find “committed suicide” to be insensitive as suicide is no longer illegal in the Western world. You might try “died by suicide.”

  1. Tell stories; remember and honor.

One of the best gifts you can give the bereaved is to tell stories of their deceased loved one. Parents, especially, never tire of hearing stories of their lost child. They appreciate his/her name being mentioned. Their child will always be in their thoughts and in their heart.

If bereaved loved ones are joining your holiday table, consider a small candle lit in the deceased’s honor or, perhaps, a toast…Let’s raise our glass to Sam who always made us laugh or Here’s to Sarah, we sure miss her – and her pumpkin pie, too.

  1. Give some latitude.

This grieving business is not easy. Everyday can be an effort to put your feet on the floor and take a step. Survivors of suicide are awash in complicated grief. Suicide leaves the survivors in an emotional muddle.

Further, suicide is a trauma. And, be aware, that survivors of suicide are at high risk for suicide themselves due to the broken taboo, the overwhelming grief, guilt and relentless replay of their lost loved one’s life and wondering if they could have done anything to change the outcome. It requires enormous fortitude to walk this particular path of grief. Go gently.

There are times when we all need a little help from our friends, and most especially when there has been a death by suicide.

Jungian analyst, poet, and cantadora (keeper of the old stories), Clarissa Pinkola Estes tells us that the wise, elder women of her family would say, “The only miracle medicine we have is each other.” Indeed.

BOOK REVIEW – A LITTLE REBELLION NOW AND THEN: A Tale of Two Eras by Scott Skipper @SSkipperAuthor

A LITTLE REBELLION NOW AND THEN: A Tale of Two Eras

By Scott Skipper

**I rate books with cups of coffee in place of the regular stars**

I love reading a book that captures my attention from the very beginning and never lets me go! A LITTLE REBELLION NOW AND THEN by Scott Skipper is just that type of book!

Author Scott Skipper gives us a look at the lives of his characters at a date presumed to be present day by this reviewer, or is it some date in the future? He also flashes back to their lives in the 1970s.

The flashbacks into the characters’ lives allowed me to develop a feeling of intimacy with them straight away! I felt like I had spent more than a little bit of time with them during the 70s even though there is no way that could have happened. After all, I was just a child during the 70s!

The writing is very crisp and flows beautifully! The characters are incredibly interesting and also very mysterious, which kept me totally engaged in the book!

This is the first book I’ve read by Scott Skipper, but I will be rearranging my TBR piles so that I have several more of his novels very close to the top!

I can honestly give A LITTLE REBELLION NOW AND THEN: A Tale of Two Eras by Scott Skipper a steaming hot five cups of Room With Books coffee, and I definitely recommend you run out and get your copy today!

When a leftwing activist from the Nixon era morphs into a conservative writer of political incorrectness, can she ever escape the evil eye of the establishment? Political winds may shift but some things never change. If you pull on the dragon’s tail, you’d best be ready to take some heat. Kate is no stranger to a jail cell, but she thought she got past that four decades ago. Then again, in a world run amuck with knife brandishing jihadists spilling from their sharia zones, maybe a jail cell is the safest place to be.

Is it true that the more things change, the more they stay the same? For Kate it seems that way, but perhaps there is a new and more ominous threat, jihad. Her computer is hacked, there are mysterious voices on her phone, her condo is bugged, why would someone spy on a sweet old lady from Ohio who writes snarky novels about the government? Kate fought to get the bureaucratic monkey off her back at both ends of her life. She just can’t get on the good side of the establishment. In fact, she has a gift for drawing harassment upon herself. Her feud with the Feds spanned four decades from the sixties to the days of TSA, NSA and Homeland Security. Her persecution soars to precipitous heights. What is a grandmother to do when somebody is after her head? Well, WTF…

Scott Skipper is a California fiction writer with a broad range of interests, including history, genealogy, travel, science and current events. His wry outlook on life infects his novels with biting sarcasm. Political correctness is taboo. His work includes historical fiction, alternative history, novelized biography, science fiction and political satire. He is a voracious reader and habitual and highly opinionated reviewer.

BOOK REVIEW

Thank you, Brooke, for writing wonderful, clean romances! They aren’t always easy to find!

THE LEFTOVER is the first book I’ve read by Brooke Williams and I was very pleased with it!

THE LEFTOVER is a romantic comedy and is written with an incredible wit! The writing is just right to keep the light moments light, and the not so light moments are mostly hilarious!

The multitude of characters are a wonderful mix. They are all believable, and I think I’ve met most of them on my life’s journey! They are very diverse and represent the best, the vainest, the most vapid, the most loyal, and a true egotist, an accurate sampling of humanity!

Megan struggles with her own self-image and her lack of confidence in herself is a challenge too many young women face! Brooke wrote her brilliantly and I couldn’t help but love her as she faced each challenge!

I found the love story to be a secondary theme and Cane to be the perfect imperfect man for it! He struck me as an unusual fellow, allowing his insecurities and imperfections to be seen. Cane had a depth to his character that endeared him to me in the long run!

Brooke Williams has a bestseller in THE LEFTOVER in my opinion and you should grab your copy right away!

I give THE LEFTOVER by Brooke Williams five steaming hot Room With Books cups of coffee!

Now she is back, and gone is the awkward girl from Booker’s youth. She has been replaced by a stunning woman with secrets.

Secrets that Booker is desperate to know.

Sharing a bedroom wall with your best friend from childhood quickly turns to anything but sweet and innocent.

BOOK REVIEW

Thank you, Amy Daws, for writing KEEPER, another Harris Brothers book that I truly enjoyed reading!

It would be very easy for an author to turn this series into frivolous man-whore books without substance! Fortunately, Amy Daws has delved much deeper into her characters than to allow this to be all they are about!

The Harris Brothers in KEEPER are as familiar to me by now as if they were my brothers indeed.

Booker, as the baby of the family, is an endearing fellow, yet filled with a multitude of emotions, which he holds tightly inside himself! He is a warm, living, breathing human being on paper!

Poppy is a wonderful girl I would enjoy adding to my list of close friends. She laughs, she cries, has insecurities, and is so real. Again, Amy has taken a concept of who she would be and made her come alive!

Then Amy draws the other family members from her previous books and enriches the story. The family continues, so it feels like checking in on old friends.

I’m so impressed with Amy Daws as an author and KEEPER is a must read! KEEPER rates five steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee!

EXCERPT

“Did you go out a lot in Frankfurt?” I ask because I’m still curious to hear more about her time over there. “Did those German blokes you flirted with for tips show you a nice time?”

She twists her head to frown up at me, puzzling her brows at my random question. “Are we really going to talk about this?”

I shrug because, well, now that I’ve opened the can, I don’t really want to stuff it all back in. “Did you leave anyone behind broken hearted?”

“No,” she murmurs and a tense silence stretches out before us. “What about you? You have a girlfriend I should know about?”

I roll my eyes. “I wouldn’t have invited you to stay if I had a girlfriend.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because…look at you,” I scoff.

That tense silence returns, but this time I can hear her breathing. I can feel the rise and fall of her shoulders as she leans against me.

Her voice is soft when she asks, “What do you mean, look at you?”

I tug on my earlobe, feeling a stirring in my stomach that doesn’t have anything to do with the massive amounts of whiskey I consumed tonight. “I think it’s quite obvious, Poppy. You’re not merely a girl anymore. You’re…a woman. And that haircut. I don’t know. It just…suits you.”

She turns her head up and looks at me curiously. I return her gaze, noting the light dusting of freckles across the bridge of her nose. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed those before. She draws my eyes downward as she licks her lips and a warmth spreads between us.

All of the sudden, she sits up, pulling me out of the trance I have on her lips as she situates herself crisscross to face me. I inhale deeply as her hand slides into my hair right above my ear. “Looks like you could use a cut,” she croaks, combing through the thick locks. I expect her to pull away, but she lingers, her scent wafting over me. My eyes fall closed as she slices through every strand and traces her fingertips along the nerve endings on my scalp, massaging in slow, languid movements.

God, that feels good.

My head nods to the side as I slur, “I’ve missed you, Poppy.”

She exhales. “I’ve missed you, too, Booker.”

“No, I mean, I’ve seriously missed you.” Groaning from her touch, I add, “I put one of my lamps in your room. I know how you hate the dark.”

Silence ensues, so my eyes lazily open and find she’s watching me.

“I don’t know why I said that just now,” I husk.

Her hand falls away from my head, but I catch it with mine because, well, I’m not ready for her to stop touching me yet. I want to be close to her like we always used to be.

I slide my fingers between hers, loving the softness of her hands against the hardness of mine, the smallness of hers against the largeness of mine. She feels so good against my skin. I never want to lose Poppy again. I’ve missed having her near me like this.

Aching for more, I pull her to me. Her legs unfold as she tucks into my chest, one hand over my heart, the other still entwined with mine. She nestles into me like she did when we were kids and she’d been crying about one of the many animals that died at her dad’s clinic.

Pressing her nose into my chest, her shoulders rise as she inhales deeply. I can feel her warm breath through the fabric of my shirt and it feels good. Really good. I want her mouth to open so her breath goes from warm to hot. I want her lips to part, and I want to feel her tongue on my body. On me. Flesh against flesh.

I crook my finger beneath her chin and lift her face to mine. She looks beautiful. Familiar and comfortable, like a memory that I once lost. I lower my head so we’re eye-to-eye and softly brush her lips with mine. It’s a kiss of friendship. Of history. Of knowing someone so completely that you assume you know what their lips will taste like before you even touch them.

But I didn’t know.

I had no f*cking idea.

Flowers & Stone

by Jan Sikes

A hot Texas summer, dim-lit honky-tonk bar rooms, a young naïve fledgling go-go dancer and a wild rebel Texas musician sets the stage for this story.

Can Darlina Flowers ever hope to fit in to this strange new world and even more important, can she trust Luke Stone with her heart?

Luke Stone, a good man who has made a career of bad decisions, falls as completely in love with Darlina as she does with him. But is it too late?

Will their eternal unyielding love survive the test of time, distance and iron bars?

AMAZON

Award winning Biographical/Fiction sequel to Flowers and Stone. Luke and Darlina find their love severely tested as they struggle to overcome enormous odds.

When Texas veteran musician, Luke Stone, finds himself behind bars with a seventy-five year sentence, he is filled with hate, anger and rebelliousness. He’s lost everything that he treasures, including the woman who holds his heart.

How has it come down to this? He’s spent his entire life writing songs and making music, filling dancehalls and bars from Texas to California. But, when he refuses to tell the FBI what he knows about certain bank robberies that he possesses knowledge of, they make sure he pays dearly.

Broken and alone, in a prison of her own, Darlina Flowers struggles to find a way to live without the man she loves so completely.

Over the next sixteen years, Luke and Darlina each search for ways to somehow survive the fate life has hurled them into.

In an effort to dull the pain of living with only half a heart, Darlina gets involved in drugs, then follows a guru and tries different relationships, but nothing fills the void.

Several years pass before Luke makes up his mind that prison will not break him. He crawls up from the bottom one tiny step at a time, determined to be and do something worthwhile and discovers artistic talents he never realized he had.

The Convict and the Rose inspires hope and shows how anyone can turn a negative dark situation into a positive one. But more importantly, the story portrays a love that goes beyond earthly confines and proves how persistence and faith come with their own sweet reward.

Join Luke and Darlina as they continue their epic journey with love as their constant North Star and freedom as the driving force.

AMAZON

Veteran Texas musician, Luke Stone, has cheated death more times then he cares to remember. Now, with a chance for a second music career, he knows the sand in his hourglass is running thin. His anchor in life and true love, Darlina, stands at his side determined to help make the dream a reality. But, his aging body is sabotaging every effort and the only thing that keeps him going is sheer will power and the love he has for Darlina. This is a story of inspiration, endurance and most of all undying love. Will fate allow Luke to sing his last song?

I purchased copies of Flowers and Stone, The Convict and the Rose, Almost Home, and Til Death Do Us Part by Jan Sikes and I am very pleased to offer a review of each book!

Flowers and Stone is the beginning of a riveting story of two people who meet and fall in love, and the damage that life choices has on their future! This is Jan Sike’s debut novel.

The Convict and the Rose is the second book in this series about Darlina and Luke. Mrs. Sikes continues their story as a long, forced separation intrudes on the lives. They face many challenges, but they learn and grow along the way!

Almost Home is the third book in this series and every bit as exciting as the first two books! Mrs. Sikes lets us into their lives, finally lived together, and their love that continues to grow!

Til Death Do Us Part is the final offering in the story of Darlina and Luke. It is a time of challenges faced and challenges met, with obvious love for each other growing stronger along the way.

Ms. Sikes has written each novel with such depth of emotion that I felt virtually every feeling along with Darlina as I was reading! I spent plenty of time with tissues in hand! The pace was very steady and my attention never wavered. As a matter of fact, I couldn’t reach the end of each book fast enough to move on to the next! It was a mesmerizing story from beginning to end!

The story of Darlina (Jan Sikes) and Luke (Rick Sikes) is a love story for the ages and fraught with challenges seemingly every step of the way. This series is made more poignant for me by the fact that it is the true account of two people, fictionalized for the benefit of the author!

Multi-Award winning author, Jan Sikes, weaves stories in a creative and entertaining way. She has been called a magician and wordsmith extraordinaire by her readers and peers.

Most recently, Jan self-published a series of four books that have been called biographies with a musical twist. They chronicle the life a Texas musician who was a pioneer in the Outlaw Music movement before it ever had a name. She also released a music CD of original songs which match the time period of each story.

Her newest release is a unique book of poetry and art.

Jan writes songs, poetry, short stories, screenplays and novels. She resides in North Texas and sits on the board of directors for the Texas Authors Institute of History.

When all of life is stripped away, left with no freedom except in his mind, one man journeys deep inside to discover his true self. He finds the only way to survive hopeless negativity is through creating with his hands and imagination. They confined his body in an iron cage, but could not lock away his mind.

What you’ll find between the covers of this book are expressions of raw emotion…Poems of deep sadness and loss, humorous musings, political wisdom, life observations and tender love from both Rick and Jan Sikes.
The pen-and-ink art (Pointillism) drawn by Rick, is simply another extension of creativity and partners with the poems.

Rick Sikes poured pieces of his heart and soul into these writings and art, and it was his hope that through hard-earned wisdom and insight, he could help others on their soul’s journey.

ONE DYKE COZY

by Rhani D’Chae

People come into our lives for a day, a season, or a reason…

“Shy taught me to fight like a champion, love like a poet, & live like it was my last day on earth.”

One Dyke Cozy touches on the lives of two girls, Gabby and Shy, from their first meeting as children to Shy’s untimely death.

This novel contains profanity and adult situations.

I purchased a copy of One Dyke Cozy by Rhani D’Chae for the purpose of an honest review and it was a pleasure to read.

One Dyke Cozy is a wonderful story that is a mixture of coming of age and building lasting relationships and was beautifully written!

Rhani’s characters are very well written and easy to relate to. They have depth and emotion that is felt throughout the book! From the moment Gabby and Shy meet until the moment they part is a lesson on how to build a lasting friendship, loyalty, and how to love someone completely and without judgement!

Rhani D’Chae has a gift with the written word and she has shared it with us once again in writing One Dyke Cozy!

He rejected her. She loathes him. Now they have to fool everyone and pretend they actually like each other.

Tanner Harris has been busy shagging his way through the ladies of east London, but getting caught by the paparazzi buck-naked with his trouser snake in his hands means he’s sowed his last wild oat.

Dr. Belle Ryan once thought Tanner Harris was the perfect kind of bearded bad boy she needed to relieve a bit of stress after her intense job as a surgical fellow, but an icy cold rejection from London’s sluttiest footballer puts the two at each other’s throats.

Fate and a favour conspire to put Tanner and Belle back in each other’s paths and they’re forced to do a lot more than get along to save face and their careers.

Rage turns to passion and tempers run sizzling hot when they realise they aren’t just falling for each other—they’re jumping head first. And neither have the endurance to keep their hands to themselves.

It was my pleasure to read and review ENDURANCE by Amy Daws.

I’m in love with the characters that Amy has written in ENDURANCE. They both seem to have lost their ever-lovin’ minds, but together Tanner and Belle make perfect sense! It was fun to get involved in their story and watch them go from fake it to make it, maybe not happily-ever-after in the “perfect” sense, but definitely together-ever-after, with crazy in those moments in between!

The Harris family is quickly becoming my favorite family, and has almost become the family I want to be from! They are filled with fun, fights, more fun, and at the end of the day, the kind of love that keeps a family close together.

I very highly recommend ENDURANCE by Amy Daws and give it five crazy hot cups of Room With Books coffee!

I cheers my beer with hers and chug the rest down. I drop the bottle and begin swirling Indie around in a childish spin that sends us both flying in different directions and crashing to the ground. Hot, sweaty hands wrap around me and pull me to my feet.

“Thank you, Good Samaritan,” I slur, turning to face my gallant saviour.

When my eyes glance up and focus, I’m stunned by the bearded vision before me. “You look like a guy I know!”

He clutches his hands firmly around my waist and holds me to him. “You look like a girl I want to know.”

I laugh half-heartedly and try to pull away.

“Are you trying to leave me, lass?” he slurs into my ear.

I frown and my head bobbles. “How could I leave you, Jesus? You’re God’s son…You’re everywhere.” I throw my hands out wide to punctuate my “everywhere” and attempt to stumble away.

He grabs me again, this time his hands dipping lower to my arse. My good mood evaporates instantly. “Hey!” I shout. “Watch your f*cking hands!”

I attempt to shove him away, but he feels like one of those doors that you push when you’re supposed to pull. He doesn’t budge. He leans in close and whispers in my ear, “I’d like to put my hands on your tight little—”

Right when I’m about ready to punch the wank stain in his vile mouth, I nearly fall over as a strange momentum spins me away. The man’s hands are no longer groping me. They are now pinned deftly behind his back by no other than—

“Tanner?” I utter with a gasp, my hands covering my mouth at the shock of the scene before me.

“Shove the f*ck off, you disgusting prat, before I turn your wrist into a pretzel.” Tanner pushes him into a nearby table, and the man almost topples over but catches himself before scurrying away without a look back.

Blue, angry eyes swerve to me. “Ryan,” Tanner growls, slicing a hand through his hair to get it off of his face. “I’ve texted you like twenty times.”

“I…I…I haven’t looked at my mobile in a while.”

“No f*cking shit.” His bearded jaw is taut with anger. “I’m taking you home.”

He reaches out for my arm but I yank it away from him.

“No, you’re not.”

His shoulders rise and fall with a deep breath. “I’m taking you home. You’re completely pissed.”

My eyes narrow. “Of course I am. It’s Tequila Sunrise night.”

“I don’t give a f*ck,” he snaps. “Let’s go.”

I shoot him a murderous look when a voice interrupts us. “I’ve got mine. You got yours?” I turn to see Camden holding a sleepy-looking Indie against his body.

Determination slices through Tanner’s voice. “I’ve got her.”

I turn to face him, stumbling a bit as I wag my finger in his face. “Hey, I am not yours!” Suddenly, Tanner bends over and I’m airborne for a second, landing heavily on top of his shoulder. “Are you f*cking kidding me, Harris?” I begin pounding on his back but it’s to no avail. “I’m in a dress. My arse is hanging out for all of England!”

“Your arse was hanging out when you spread out on the floor a minute ago. I’m taking you home, Ryan. Even if you’re kicking and screaming.”

“You’re such an arrogant arsehole!” My hands stop their assault on Tanner’s backside in favour of covering my rump. This is mortifying. I hang my head and let my hair cover my face, praying like f*ck I don’t see anyone I know. “I can’t believe this is happening.”

“Believe it, woman.” Tanner pauses at the door and turns his body so my head is facing a different direction. “Now, tell this nice man I’m not a rapist.”

A bouncer-looking bloke turns his head upside down to make eye contact with me. I mumble, “He’s not a rapist. Just a walking dead man.” I straighten a bit with my crescendoed scream. The bouncer lets out a hearty laugh that dumps hot coals into the pit of my belly. So not the reaction I was looking for.

He moves to let us pass and then Tanner drops me down in front of a cab. I ball up my fists and wallop him a few times. “I’m not a petulant child, you animal.”

He doesn’t even flinch.

I exhale in concession and fold myself in behind Indie and Camden. When we’re all in the cab and it begins moving, Tanner breaks the silence with a surprisingly jovial tone. “Well, did you all have a fun night?”

The Essence of Courage Book Tour @LynnUWatson @LovingtheBook

As women we encounter multiple challenges, while simultaneously wearing many hats. We need courage to face our challenges and commitments. In Song of Solomon 4, Solomon ascribes the essences of his locked garden to the courageous woman he has taken as his wife. This inspirational study will
provide an opportunity for you to discover:
• The secrets of the fruit, spices, and essential oils in Solomon’s locked garden.
• A deeper meaning of these fruits, spices and essential oil essences in Scripture by studying different women in the Bible.
• How others learn through their struggles and triumphs when you meet Cinnamah-Brosia and the women with whom she does life.
• Encouragement to allow the Holy Spirit to cultivate the essence of courage in your heart.
• Fun facts about the spices and essential oils, along with ways for you to
enjoy incorporating reminders of the fruit they represent into your life.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of The Essence of Courage by Lynn Watson for the purpose of an honest review.

It was my pleasure to read The Essence of Courage by Lynn Watson.

As a devotional, The Essence of Courage, ranks among my current favorites! Learning about the different spices, along with their biblical references, and of course, the stories of Cinnameh-Brosia’s friends made this a book incredibly interesting!

I read The Essence of Courage more like a book, because once I started into it, I didn’t want to stop! After each offering, Ms. Watson included a selection that encouraged the reader to get more involved by making something including the spice, researching the spice further, or even decorating using the spice. It made the learning even more fun!

The lessons learned from the Bible in The Essence of Courage are all from passages I had learned previously, but I’m quite certain the way Ms. Watson presented them will keep them fresh in my mind and easy to recall the next time the Fruits of the Spirit come up for discussion!

It is with great pleasure that I offer The Essence of Courage by Lynn Watson five steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee.

Snippet

“Ewww…. that smells like my closet floor with all my dirty clothes and smelly socks!” That was one young lady’s spontaneous reaction as my husband shared spikenard with his fifth grade Sunday school class. The day’s lesson: Mary anointing Jesus’ head. We can be sure the aroma of a full pint of the oil filled the room. Shooey!!!

The cost – not the aroma – alarmed the disciples (especially Judas, the one who later betrayed Him for personal financial gain). The others’ concerns acknowledged the fact spikenard sold for a handsome price, and the money could help the poor. There was surely a better use for the resource than pouring a whole pint of expensive oil on someone’s head.

Considering the cost and undeterred by their criticism, razzing and complaints, Mary chose to serve Jesus. She believed He was the most valuable investment opportunity in her life. Hindsight tells us she was absolutely correct!    from “The Essence of Spikenard in Scripture: What Is Your Spikenard?”  page 69

Author Interview

What inspired your book?

Through my thirteen-year journey into the world of essential oils many years I saw plants, oils, spices, and fruits mentioned in the Bible in a whole new way. This book shares some of those fresh perspectives. What may seem an insignificant mention of a plant and/or its derivatives often carries more meaning.

How do you spend your free time?

Creative projects or hanging with friends and family. I love that two of our grandchildren live close by.

What is the thing you struggle with the most while writing? And how do you defeat it?

Getting started. The first sentence, paragraph, whatever page is usually awful. Just have to get some words on the paper. Then the creativity can emerge.

When did you first realize you were an author?

Think it’s been in me for a very long time. My husband (of nearly 44 years) would always ask when I was going to publish my novel. I never saw myself as a novelist, but I believe the idea of a book has been there at least since high school.

If your book was made into a movie, who would play the main character roles?

She may be a few years younger than Cinnamah-Brosia and look different as well, but that’s probably ok. I believe Candace Cameron-Bure would be a great choice.

Pulled reluctantly into women’s ministry nearly four decades ago, Lynn Watson now treasures the opportunities that were provided to lead, encourage and mentor women through relationships and Bible studies. She wrote a few of the studies, too. Drawing from those experiences, along with years serving others professionally in the complementary healthcare field and her love for essential oils, Lynn delights in bringing her readers freshly inspired insights drawn from and focused on the many fruits, plants, oils, and spices mentioned in God’s Word. Married since 1973, Lynn and Steve call Bartlett, Tennessee home. Their home is filled with handmade treasures and lots of love for family, especially their five beautiful (of course) grandchildren.

It is always a pleasure to read a well written novel, and RUN TO HER by Lynn Kellan did not disappoint!

Ms. Kellan has written more than a boy meets girl, you know the rest right up until the HEA! She has written a story with heart, and hurt, and second chances. RUN TO HER feels incredibly real and was very hard to put down!

The realities of PTSD and it’s affects on those who suffer is not lost on me, as I’m all to familiar with those symptoms. Ms. Kellan handles it very honestly, without sensationalizing it.

I highly recommend RUN TO HER by Lynn Kellan and give it five steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee!

A fat raindrop splattered on the porch screen. And another. Tiny fragments of water landed on Leigh’s shoulder like little kisses. A shiver trickled across her back, forcing her to step toward the center of the porch to avoid getting wet.

The carefree humor fled from his expression. His gaze dropped to the tips of her toes and slowly rose up her legs, her body, her face. Gabe locked eyes with her, reached out, and opened his hand.

An invitation.

She gazed at his broad palm and dark memories rose, fueled by a violent incident that flashed through her mind whenever a big man got close…but this man was different. Gabe used his considerable strength to protect, not dominate. Months ago, he’d pulled off the Interstate to help her when no one else had. After that, he’d showed up to run with her when no one else would. And a few minutes ago, he’d tamed his powerful Harley so she’d enjoy the ride when no one else seemed to care if she had any fun. Even tiny things like ladybugs received his special brand of kindness.

She had no reason to believe Gabe would willfully hurt her. Even so, her heart tripped at the sight of the thick rope of muscle along his arm.

Lynn Kellan writes contemporary romance about strong men who have a weakness for smart women. She believes men and women aren’t that different, because everyone wants to be with someone who will empty the dishwasher. To prepare for her career as a romance author, she fell in love with bad boys, burly athletes, battle-hardened Marines…and married a chemist. Lynn has won numerous writing contests and served two terms as President of her local Romance Writers of America chapter, but she feels a true sense of accomplishment whenever she doesn’t embarrass her teenaged kids.

For love. For funny. For ever.
